How do you mend a broken heart? My wife and I were a big part of sharing Derrick’s youth. He was born one year after our daughter. The Crofoot’s and the Souza’s were backyard neighbors for over 30 years. So, during that time, we shared in the joy of all our children. My son John Jr. always expressed Derrick to be his big brother and one of his best friends. I had the privilege to coach him several times over the years. Derrick was so energetic, eager to learn and a joy not only on the field but in our home. We will always love him as one of our own. I am a retiree of the Lab as well. Mike Crofoot and I worked in the Cabinet Shop together. Mike’s qualities as a leader,a teacher, friend, husband, and father rubbed off on Derrick.
